had this problem 25yrs ago with toyota corollia.now the question is do i need to replace the whole unit.it is a Mazda Tribute V6.it has TWO converters from what i'm told, any truth to that?can i get by with just the exhaust w/o converter i know that is illigeal but it seem to be cheaper to do it,also i seem people punchture holes in them to "clean them out" any truth to that.Cat.converter is just about shot?
Not recommended to punch out the cats. It changes the back pressure on the engine and can cause problems with enigne running properly. This probably has 3 cats on it, one on each side , and the third is after the junction of the 2 sides.
Also in order to punch out the cats you would have to remove the exhaust "Y" pipe from the engine exhaust manifolds, not an easy job.
Expect a large repair bill to have the cats replaced - if they are bad. Note, warranty on emissions part is longer than on rest of vehicle. Check with your dealer.
