Can i program a rca directv remote to work with a digital converter box?

I have a magnavox converter box, and i lost the remote control, the box is the model they sell at WM. I have about 10 other remotes that are magnavox brand, but they wont even "learn" the code gfor it. I read somewhere that the rca directv rc64 is a great universal remote, but im not sure how to go about programming it for the converter box, for instance, what imput would i choose. Im asking because i have that one on hand. also, i know most of the programming manuals ask that the device be powered on first to try the codes, and this box doesnt have ANY buttons on the unit itself besides a standby/on and off-so i can only turn it onto standby and you need a remote to turn it "on". does this matter? Can i program a rca directv remote to work with a digital converter box?
I just recently had the same problem. Most universal remotes aren't compatible with digital converter boxes because they are still fairly new and many companies haven't updated their databases. The RCA brand didn't work for my converter box, however the Logitech Harmony remotes will work with converter boxes, but they are expensive. The prices range from about 40 dollars to 300 dollars, but it's worth it. Install is simple. All you have to do is run the Logitech software on your computer and follow the instructions, and you will need internet service to look up the codes online. If you have any troubles, I think they give you 90 days of free tech support.
