Hook up car audio in house without converter?

I plan on hooking up just a head unit and amp (for a sub) but don't want to buy a converter or receiver. Couldn't a battery charger work? Or a car battery?

I'm pretty sure the amp is only 100 watts rms (got it from a friend awhile back)Hook up car audio in house without converter?
A car battery would certainly work - but it's a little inconvenient and certainly not very portable - and not the sort of thing you really want in the house.

A battery charger might also work, but it's not a regulated supply and some won't work without a load - i.e. a battery.

It's best if you just get on down to your local Radio Shack and pick up a 12 volt converter - it's convenient and a handy device to have if you ever want to test any other components.
