Questions about DAC (Digital Analog Converter) unit?

What is the purpose of a stand along DAC unit? How do you connect it to your system?

Isn't a CD player already has a DAC chip inside the player? what is the benefit of having a separate unit?|||Unless you have a very discerning ear, you won't be able to tell the diff of a separate DAC. Many external separate DAC's are made from top shelf components. No cheap imported crap in those things. You hook them up by connecting your CD player via a coaxial or TosLink optical cable to the DAC %26amp; then running a pair of L%26amp;R analog cables to your CD input on the receiver. In theory, they do sound better %26amp; can make a cheap CD player sound better. In many cases like that it works. But your DAC is only as good as the rest of your gear. If you spend $2500 on an external DAC %26amp; hook it up to a $250 receiver, it really doesn't work. A bit self defeating. Then of cpourse there is the rest of your gear like speakers, wiring, power conditioning, quality stand, isolation, room acoustics, etc... The list goes on %26amp; on %26amp; on %26amp; on %26amp;....|||Eric C? It's been a year..How are ya?
