I went to Autozone to get my code read and it read Fuel metering unit: either low fuel pressure, either vaccum fail .... in the meantime, my catalytic converter is making an awful noise? Could that be related? And does anyone know how much this fix could be? Also, Autozone told me they don t carry the parts (cat.) because VW is stingy with their parts....is that true or do you know places where I could find it? Thanks for your help!Fuel metering unit on New Beetles?
Best bet for a cheap/good fix for your cat is to go to the junkyard. A cat from any Jetta, GTI or Golf will fit. Just cut and weld on your bug (by a shop or friends). The important thing is that the cat has a port on it for an O2 sensor. Even a generic aftermarket cat will sometimes come with that. Don't think you have to get a new one from the dealer. They'll bleed you dry, and it won't be in any way better than either of the 2 fixes I suggested. As far as the code you're getting - you'll need to investigate further. My best bet is that it's related to a vacuum line that goes toward the fuel tank. That line sometimes cracks and needs to be replaced. Not an expensive job. But it could also be as simple as getting some bad gasoline, or the gas cap being on a little looser after the fillup. Try tightening the gas cap a few clicks, just for the heck of it. Below, are the 2 best forums for a New Beetle owner. The first one is much frendlier (my regular hangout) and the second one has lots of great technical info, but the people are a little prone to flaming newbies. Hope to see you there, and good luck with the buggy :)
