I have a set of US-made Wahl Clippers, the Groom-n-Trim Pros. I bought a power converter with says on the unit that it takes 220/240volt / AC 50W 50Hz, and steps-down to 110/120 Volt AC 60 HZ. The clippers say they are 120 Volt and 60 Hz, so this should work, but when I turn them on, the unit is much, much louder than I know from previous use in the States.
Thus my question: Is it safe to use them, and the noise is just from the step-down process? Or, should I start looking for some clippers here in Germany? Will a power converter allow me to use my Wahl Clipper in Germany?
The converters step down the voltage, but can't do much about the 50 Hz, so if the clippers expect a 60 Hz and they get 50 Hz, that may create problems.
I would get some new clippers. Will a power converter allow me to use my Wahl Clipper in Germany?
In your case, the clipper mechanism is designed to work off of 60 Hz specifically.
You are using just a voltage converter transformer, which converts just the voltage, the line frequency staying at 50 Hz, or a converter which amongst other things, tries to make a 60 hz signal, but as a simulated sinewave, either which your clippers do not like very well.
